Hello, I’m Katie Howard. Before diving into the depths of vulnerability, let me introduce myself and explain why I’ve been chosen to write this blog, despite not having traditional qualifications. Formerly an advertising copywriter, I now work as a Registered Behavior Technician, helping children with Autism. My passion for mental health and behavior extends far beyond my day job, and I’m thrilled to share my insights with you.
I ask for your patience as I navigate discussing grief and mental illness. Though I lack formal credentials, my understanding comes from personal experiences and dedicated research.
Understanding Mental Health
Mental well-being fluctuates on a spectrum, influenced by genetics, environment, behavior, and numerous other factors. At some point, everyone experiences poor mental health. Whether triggered by a traumatic event or persisting lifelong, mental illness affects us all—even those you’d least expect.
At 22, I battled Anorexia Nervosa, an eating disorder that overtook my autonomy. Despite a seemingly privileged life, my mental health deteriorated. This raises a crucial question: What drives our brains to self-destructive behaviors? From eating disorders to suicide, our brains sometimes adopt harmful measures to protect us.
A Personal Tragedy: Losing My Brother to Suicide
On February 7, 2024, I lost my younger brother, Jay Howard, to suicide. This grief is unparalleled; I had never experienced such profound pain for someone else. In response, my family founded Brotherwood Coffee, aiming to raise funds for suicide prevention. While coffee alone can’t change the world, it can fuel essential conversations about mental health.
